Editor’s Note – June 9, 2014

This installment of FOCI Words offers two distinct perspectives on contemporary performance practice from leading members of the field. Amanda DeBoer Bartlett and Liam Hockley are both accomplished, thoughtful proponents of contemporary music who undertake their work with unsurpassed care and consideration. Although they offer different views on current interpretive issues, their efforts to articulate a position themselves reflect a wider need for communication and understanding between present-day musicians. Their thoughts provide clarity in the midst of contemporary music’s stylistic and philosophical plurality. FOCI Words is pleased to share them.
